During the setup process, LabStats will prompt you to choose the applications you would like to track. It is important to take the time to think about the kind of data that is useful to you. This will impact the applications that you decide to track. LabStats does not have retroactive tracking. This means that LabStats will not start to collect data on an application until you track it.
Consider tracking similar programs and common web applications. If you track Adobe Photoshop, also track Gimp. You could then run a report to see the usage of Photoshop vs Gimp. You might also want to track websites like YouTube or Facebook. You could then see a report that shows Facebook usage on computers with expensive software. If computers with expensive software are only used to access free applications, you could potentially reduce the number of paid licenses and save thousands.
Whatever you decide to track now, you can edit the list of tracked applications at any time. It would be better to err on the side of tracking too many at the beginning.
