LabMaps

Use the LabMaps feature to display on websites/kiosks which computers are being used. Students will be able to easily and efficiently find computers to use, and the utilization of lab computers will increase. It also reduces the number of student complaints since students will be able to quickly locate an available computer.

Create a New Map

1. Navigate to Tools > LabMaps

2. Click Add New Map on the upper-right side of the screen.

3. Enter a name and description, if desired. Click Submit.

4. The new map will appear in your list of maps. Click the edit button to the right of the map to begin creating the map.

5. With a brand new map, it will prompt you to either upload/select a background image you would like to use for the map or to pick a background color. These can be changed at any time. Note that if you upload a background image, the map size will automatically change to match the image size.

6. At the top left of the page will be where you can select a group. Select the group that you want to display on the map and all the computers associated with that group will appear underneath the search box. There are then three ways to add computers to the map.

   1. Drag and drop the computer onto the map. The map utilizes a grip to make aligning computers very easy

   2. Click the “Place” button next to each computer you wish to add. This will place the computers on an available spot in the grid, you can then move the computer to your desired location.

   3. Click the “Place all in a grid” button at the bottom left of the page. This will add all the computers currently in this group to the map at once.

7. If you wanted to remove a computer from the map, click on the computer icon and that will bring up the selection details on the right side of the page. These details will include exact positioning, what icon to use for that computer, and a remove button at the bottom right of the page.

8. To edit the map properties, at the top right choose the “Map Settings” button. This window will have 4 sections: General, Canvas, Icons and Labels, and Grid.

   1. General: Map Name – The name of the map.

   2. General: Map Description – The description of the map.

   3. Canvas: Map Background – You can use the dropdown menu to select an already uploaded background image or click the upload button to the right to add a new image to your LabStats portal. This could be a diagram, a photo, or something as simple as a wireframe created in a paint program. Note if you wanted to remove any uploaded background images from your portal, you can either click the Manage background images button right underneath that dropdown menu or navigate to Admin > Advanced > Image Manager (either option requires a user with Global Admin permissions).

   4. Canvas: Map Width – Set the map width in pixels. Default value is 800.

   5. Canvas: Map Height – Set the map height in pixels. Default value is 450.

   6. Canvas: Background Color – Select a color for the background.

   7. Icons and labels: Label – Display a label for each station using the Computer Name, Hostname, or IP address

   8. Icons and Labels: Show operating system – Display the operating system on a line below the label

   9. Icons and Labels: Show computer info tooltip – If you click on a computer icon on your LabMap, it will display a tooltip showing metadata about the computer, such as its status, OS, IP address, and hostname.

   10. Icons and Labels: Label color – Select a color for the icon labels

   11. Icons and Labels: Font Size – Font size of the labels.

   12. Icons and Labels: Icon Size – Increase or decrease the computer icon size.

   13. Grid: Grid Size – Change the size of the grid. Note that you can turn the grid on/off, as well as, turn the grid snapping feature on/off, using the toolbar at the top of the map.

9. Click Publish map at the top right to save your changes. You can also click the Preview live button to see what it looks like before committing your changes. Any pending changes will also be displayed at the top of the page.

10. Click LabMaps at the top left of the page to return to the map list where you can view, edit, or delete maps.

Download and Publish a Map

Single Map

1. Navigate to LabTools > LabMaps.
2. Click Download Viewer Template to download the MapViewerTemplate.html file.
3. Select Map, click Download Template.
   • This HTML file will display the map exactly as it was created. It can be published on its own or embedded in an iframe on an existing webpage.

Multiple Maps on a Single Display

1. Navigate to LabTools > LabMaps.
2. Click Download Carousel Viewer Template to download the MapMultiViewerTemplate.html file.
3. Select Map, click Download Template.
   • This HTML file will display the map exactly as it was created. It can be published on its own or embedded in an iframe on an existing webpage.
