When the LabStats extension is installed on ChromeOS devices, it will pull the metadata of that device, just like it would with Windows or macOS. However; in order to pull some of that metadata (hostname, manufacturer, and model), additional steps need to be taken in Google Admin. Managed extensions must be allowed to use the Enterprise Hardware Platform API and there needs to be a variable defined as the hostname before this information can be populated in LabStats. Here are the steps to set up both of those:
Manufacturer and Model
- Log into Google Admin (admin.google.com)
- Navigate to Devices > Chrome > Settings > Device Settings and search for the “Enterprise Hardware Platform API” setting
- Configure this setting to “Allow managed extensions to use the Enterprise Hardware Platform API”
Hostname
- Log into Google Admin (admin.google.com)
- Navigate to Devices > Chrome > Settings > Device Settings and search for the “Device network hostname template” setting
- This setting needs to be configured to use one of Google’s predefined variables. Note that only ${SERIAL_NUM} and ${MAC_ADDR} are pre-populated so if you want to use one of the other available variables to send as the hostname, you will need to define that one first.
If the extension is already deployed, these updated values will be applied the next time the extension checks into LabStats.
